Dragonforce Guitarist Speaks Up on Bassist Quitting: He Was Never Biggest Fan of This Music

During a recent interview on the Scars & Guitars Podcast, Dragonforce guitarist Sam Totman addressed bassist Frédéric Leclercq’s last-year departure from the group following a 13-year tenure.

As reported, Frédéric went on to join the German thrash metal legends Kreator. Right after he left, Damien Rainaud stepped to cover the bass parts after popular YouTuber Stevie T. accepted the job and then stepped off.

The group has recently hired Alicia Vigil as its touring bass player. Asked if he knew why Leclerq left, Sam replied:

“Yeah, I think he was never the biggest fan of this style of music in the first place, which is kind of funny because he was in Heavenly as well. I think he kind of had enough, he didn’t really like our new artwork and this whole theme of cartoons or anything.

“So, he just wasn’t into it anymore, and then I think that this Kreator thing kind of came up, by chance at the same time. I think they asked him to fill in for some gigs and then they told him, ‘If you want to be a permanent member, you can.’

“It kind of all fell into place. I think if it hadn’t been the Kreator thing, I think he probably would have stayed, but it was all good anyway, he wasn’t totally into it, so it kind of worked out fine.”
